A Special Birthday Girl

Octopus Dinner

Aunt Katy is staying with us for a few days and we are having a great time with her. We celebrated her birthday with yummy cake and watched the Gray's Anatomy finale from last season with me last night. It was her first time seeing it, but I sat and cried all over again!
Tonight Aunt Katy worked her magic for Libby and Drew's dinner by making an octopus on top of their red beans and rice. We added goldfish crackers, too.  So far it's a hit!

EASY-PEASY to do:
Simply cut 8 long slits in the bottom 1/2 or so of a hot dog (bun length is best). Spread them out so that they sit on top of goldfish crackers, rice, mac-n-cheese, beans, etc. Add eyes, nose, mouth with ketchup or mustard. Seriously- that's IT!

Cox Farms Fall Festival 2010

October came and went in a flash. It hasn't felt like Fall until just recently since we had unusually warm weather. But we're finally having chilly days and nights and beautiful foliage everywhere.

One Fall tradition we have as a family (as does the rest of the entire DC area) is to attend the Cox Farms Fall Festival. Luckily, we live right down the street from it, so we were able to head over there one Sunday evening before closing. We had a lot of fun sliding down slides, feeding the goats, and taking a wagon ride in the forest. Drew is still pretty scared of things. I hope it's just a phase. He seems to talk himself through things, but if something scares him, he will talk about it for weeks afterward. One of the slides there had a Jack and the Beanstalk theme. There were the giant's hands at the very top, which were "giant" and a looping soundtrack of him laughing. Only it was really slowed down, so it was a deep voice that sounded kinda spooky. We tried to tell him over and over that he was safe and even showed him the radio speakers and tried to explain it to him. The employee even told him it wasn't real. But then again, he is only 3! But he is still talking about it at times... "I won't go on the giant slide next year, okay, Mama?" "He's not a real giant, but he is a BAD giant." "I don't like those hands, Mama. Those giant hands were scary." I feel bad like we have completely traumatized him since it's been a couple of weeks and he's still mentioning it!

Scissor Practice

Today Libby and Drew practiced their snipping skills. They had a ball snipping a bunch of straws... until poor Drew snipped his finger,too. Good thing we have some Buzz Lightyear band-aids to help that. Don't laugh at our homemade scissors holder because it works perfectly!

Plate Arrangement

Thanks to The Nester and another Katie, I decided to hang my assortment of white dishes courtesy of my random need to collect them from thrift stores, garage sales, and on sale for a serious discount. Although I think they look nice in my sitting room over my sofa I would love to send to the curb if I had the funds to buy a new one, I am really taking this photo because my memory these days is absolutely terrible and I just know I could never get them right when puttting them back (we have to remove them since there's lots of banging on the roof today). I just couldn't stomach it I lost even one of them. I mean, that would cost me about $1 for every one to be replaced (the platter was actually $3)!

New Roof

What would you think if you woke up and saw this out your window?

As I took my very first sip of coffee this morning, I saw this huge crane lifting pallets of roofing materials off a flatbed and bringing them up to our roof. This past May, we had a hail storm, which you might remember from the blog. Thanks to USAA, we are getting a brand new roof and gutters, too. Libby and Drew have been watching the progress since they woke up, so I'm glad we have our own project managers (free of charge, too)!

Chocolate Yummy

Thank you, sweet Nana, for giving Mama the recipe for your "Chocolate Yummy"! We brought it to the party with our supper club to watch the LSU game and it is disappearing! Libby picked out the purple sprinkles because that is her favorite color.  We love you and miss you tons!

Look what Libby picked out to wear today. Luckily I was able to talk her into some LSU attire instead. To her credit, there is orange on the shorts to match the Halloween socks!
