We are so excited that, for the first time in franchise history (43 years), our home team, the New Orleans Saints, is going to the Super Bowl!! This, along with Mardi Gras, is a time when we really miss being back in Louisiana. I'm hearing from our families and friends that it is just crazy with excitement down there. CRAZY. My friend, Darnell, is an elementary school teacher and she told me that the curriculum for the entire week is football. So, math is about football, science, language arts, etc. REALLY? That seems a little much, but funny at the same time.
Darrell and I have been invited to a few parties, but we've decided we'd rather stay home and watch it alone. Don't you hate when you go to Super Bowl parties and most people either aren't really fans or just wanna chat the whole time? That sounds rude, but hopefully you know what I mean. We are so anxious yet nervous that we just want to be in front of our own big screen so we can cheer or cry or both! I went to Party City today to buy some things to get us in the spirit and they were sold out of all Saints stuff (except for the balloons I bought). They had lots of Colts things left over, so hopefully that means the "Who Dat Nation" has roots in Northern Virginia!
My friend, Andi, wrote me to ask what a "Who Dat" was. I realize that many people may not even know. So, here's what I told her:
"Who Dat" is the cheer we use for the Saints. Our "yat" accents down there made it sound this way-- It's really for "Who is that who said they're gonna beat the Saints?" Instead, it's "Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints, who dat, who dat?" There is also a song that was put on a Saints CD-- "Are you a Who Dat Fan", so people often ask "Are you a who dat?", "I'm a who dat." Then, Bobby Hebert (once a QB for the Saints, now a radio commentator) called the large sea of fans "Who Dat Nation", so you'll see signs for that, too. The most interesting thing about it is that suddenly this year, the NFL was trying to say that they owned the rights to that phrase. Let's just say the "Who Dat Nation" isn't so happy about that!
Here is an assortment of songs in case you want to get in the spirit with us:
LOL!! I admit that I like Super Bowl parties for the party of it and I eat all the food and chit chat. And maybe you would too, normally.. but I completely understand wanting to stay home and really get into your game on your home turf!! We haven't been invited to any parties this year.. I think we get that more & more since the twins! However, because of the twins, we wouldn't go any way! Don't you find that it is so hard to take two 2 year olds any where? ARGH! We can't even go to the Bud Bowl because we know we would just have to turn around and leave. So, we are hanging here too! Plus with the snow... I bet most peeps will stay home this year:)
ReplyDeleteThx for the info.. I didn't get the "who dat" thing either!
